Wrocław​ airport will have more international connections in 2014 thanks to additional flights announced by Eurolot and Lufthansa this week. Eurolot will start flying to Brussels, Paris, Milan and Zurich from the 3rd of March, while Lufthansa will increase the frequency of their flights to Munich to 3 times a day from April 1st.

The announcement by Eurolot will provide healthy competition on certain routes operated by budget airline Ryanair, who currently offer flights to cheaper out of town airports Paris Beauvais, Brussels Charleroi and Milan Bergamo. While many of the Eurolot flights are double the price of the Ryanair equivalent, the additional burden and cost of traveling to the city centre could make the Eurolot flights a more viable option. If you need to travel on certain dates however, you won't have much choice as there are currently no clashes with Ryanair and Eurolot on any of these routes. Nevertheless, if you add all the Eurolot and Ryanair connections together, Wrocław​ now has flights to Paris, Brussels and Milan at least 5 days a week – not bad is it?

Eurolot's schedule is like this: 

Paris: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays
Brussels: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
Milan: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays
Zurich: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays

In other travel news, Lufthansa have quickly filled the void about to be left by troubled Polish flagship carrier LOT, who will stop all international connections from cities other than Warsaw next April. At the same time LOT discontinue their flights to Munich, Lufthansa will increase the amount of flights from Wroclaw to the Bavarian capital from 30 to 42 a week. 

The news of these new flights comes not long after the announcement that newly formed airline Etihad Regional will operate flights from Wrocław​ to Berlin next spring.

Gone are the days when the only Pizza in Wrocław​ was the Polish style thick based variety, typically served with separate dips and topped with lashings of yellow cheese and next to no tomato sauce. The excellent Piec Na Szewskiej raised the bar when it opened just over a  year ago, and now thanks to Pizza Love Pane, an authentic variety of this famous Italian delicacy can now be found outwith the city centre.

Run by a Sicilian and Polish couple, this restaurant, take-away & delicatessen is bringing a bit of Italian passion and colour to what would otherwise be a rather drab and monotonous housing estate. 

The interior is simple but cosy, clean and pretty looking, with the various Italian deli products lined on the shelves adding to the continental aura. On the other side of the bar Pizza Love Pane also has a semi open kitchen, allowing you to see the chefs kneading and shaping the pizza dough by hand. 

The pizza itself was right up there with the aforementioned Piec Na Szewskiej, but does differ slightly in character. The base is still super thin but ever so slightly thicker, while the tasty crusts are a little bit bigger and fluffier. The tomato sauce was also notably sharper, and the heat in the salami on our topping suited our craving for a bit of spice. Is it the best in pizzeria in Wrocław​ though? Well, it's basically too close to call, and pretty much comes down to individual taste. One thing is for sure though – Pizza Love Pane are definitely contenders. 

The venue isn't without a few drawbacks however. Like many new cafes and restaurants, Pizza Love Pane still need to get through Poland's endless red tape before they can start to legally sell alcohol on the premises. Once they do though, you can expect a range of Italian wines, plus beers such as Nastro Azzurro and Birra Morreti. Another major problem is the lack of a customer toilet, which hadn't been incorporated in the initial design as the original plan was only to offer take-away. 

Those annoyances aside, Pizza Love Pane is another great addition to the growing number of quality places to eat out across Wroclaw's various districts. So if you love pizza and live anywhere around Legnicka street between Magnolia park and pl. Jana Pawla II, you'd be foolish not to try this place out. 

The Instagramers Wrocław team are planning on making a short photo based film to celebrate their first anniversary next April. To produce the video they are looking to get as many images as possible, and have appealed to Instagram fans to submit their photos of the city for use in the project.

A new novel yet simplistic system for anonymously sharing files online, named Dead Drops, has now arrived in Wrocław​. The idea, which basically involves sharing files from usb sticks cemented into walls around the city, was the brainchild of German tech enthusiast Aram Bartholl. There are currently four 'Dead Drops' in the city, and a social media campaign has sprung up encouraging more people to make their own. 

On the project's official website, Aram Barthol describes ‘Dead Drops’ as "an anonymous, offline, peer to peer file-sharing network in public space. USB flash drives are embedded into walls, buildings and kerbs accessible to anybody in public space. Everyone is invited to drop or find files on a dead drop. Plug your laptop to a wall, house or pole to share your favorite files and data. Each dead drop is installed empty except a readme.txt file explaining the project. ‘Dead Drops’ is open to participation. If you want to install a dead drop in your city/neighborhood follow the ‘how to’ instructions and submit the location and pictures."

There are currently four 'Dead Drops' in Wrocław​, located at Kazimierza Wielkiego 19A-21, Joliot-Curie 15, Ostrowskiego 30 and Psie Budy (click on the links for where to find them exactly). 

In theory, the concept is to allow people to anonymously share interesting artwork, photos, articles, documents or movies – effectively creating the tech world's equivalent of street art. The idea has struck a cord with a number of artists and tech enthusiasts throughout the city, with the likes of Instagramers Wrocław​ putting their weight behind the concept. 

Admittedly however, the scheme isn't without its flaws. Dead Drops' open platform is powerless to stop people from using it to share child pornography or harmful computer viruses. Even Aram Bothrol himself has admitted that "they could (and will) be misused for malicious software." Anyone who is interested in taking files from a Dead Drop is therefore highly recommended to have the latest anti virus software installed, or to boot up in safe mode as a precaution.

Plans to allow the sale of beer and wine inside Wrocław​'s somewhat lifeless train station have been thwarted by the Ministry of Economy. 

Contrary to the view of many local politicians, the 'Ministerstwo Gospodarki' don't believe that allowing the sale of alcohol in the train station would be a good idea. Defending their stance, the ministry have quoted police figures stating that more than 70% of the adult perpetrators of robbery, extortion, aggravated theft, violence and assault were under the influence of alcohol. 

The view that allowing the sale of alcohol in the train station would turn the place into a crime magnet isn't shared by everyone though. The likes of local politician Michał Jaros are fully behind the plans, which they believe will bring life into Wroclaw station's mostly empty retail units. Speaking to the media, Jaros stressed that no spirits such as vodka would be available in the station, and that the railway staff and business people were keen on the idea too. He also considers it to be "absurd" that while you can't buy a beer in the station, you can easily go across the road and get one from an off licence.

The original owners of the once coveted 'Le Bistrot Parisien' are back in Wroclaw with their long awaited comeback: La Fée Verte. Located right in the heart of the city center on Kotlarska street, this new restaurant​ is as authentically French as can be.

From its small tables, dim lighting, and cozy nooks to its classic ambiance and décor, La Fée Verte is as “Parisien” as it gets. Upon entering we could even hear the staff casually muttering in French to one another, which while expected, was most refreshing nonetheless.

Although the menu is offered in French and Polish only, our waiter could speak English very well and was happy to translate. We decided to start our night with the French Onion Soup and the Goat's Cheese & Eggplant stuffed Crepe.

The Goat's Cheese and Eggplant stuffed Crepe was a wonderful starter. The crepe itself had a nice consistency with just the right level of thickness, while the goat's cheese and the eggplant complimented each other well.

The French Onion Soup was a tad sweeter than what I’ve had before, but nonetheless was hearty, rich and flavorful.

For our mains we ordered the Margret De Canard, the Steak with Roquefort Sauce, and the Chicken with Spicy Mustard Sauce.

The Margaret De Canard was cooked perfectly. However, my favorite part of the dish was actually the potato gratin served alongside it, which was proper buttery melt in the mouth stuff - a must order! 

The chicken with the spicy mustard sauce was also worth ordering. The mustard sauce had a great kick to it and the portion of the chicken was generous for the price.

Our favorite dish of the night though, was the rather indulgent Steak with Roquefort Sauce. The steak was cooked exactly as we'd ordered and the cheese sauce was rich, creamy, and just to-die-for. It was served alongside some crispy fries - and let me tell you, there are few things as satisfying as dipping those fries into that cheesy Roquefort sauce.

Finally, we ended our night with the Banana & Nutella stuffed Crepe and the French classic, Crème Brûlée. Both were fantastic dishes, though the Crème Brulee was definitely the stand out desert of the two.

As you can see then, if it's French cuisine you're after, La fee Verte is where it's at. Given the poor job the new owners made of 'Le Bistrot Parisien', we certainly hope that La Fée Verte team will be around for a long time to come.

Bau Bar, ul. Ruska 3/4, Facebook Page

The recent closure of iconic venue Das Lokal has undeniably been a setback for the electro scene in the city. Nevertheless, that blow has at least been softened by the arrival of Bau Bar, a new centrally located club that's seemingly on a mission to push electronic music right into Wrocław​'s mainstream. 

Opened at the end of September, Bau Bar has already played host to a number of DJs from afar, as well as local favourties Vitek Jansky, Jurasze and Hush Hush Pony. A lot of these DJs were also on the bill at Das Lokal of course, and Bau Bar does appear to be aiming at a similar crowd. That said, the place does notably have its own different vibe. 

There's no escaping the fact that Bau Bar is a central venue nestled in-between many of Wrocław​'s popular nightlife haunts. Bau Bar's colourful sign on the door and congregation of smokers outside makes it obvious the place is open for business and that the party is well and truly on. This has attracted a lot more passers by and casual party revelers than the more to difficult to find Log:In, Das Lokal and Krakowska 180. 

The disparate crowd has given the place an altogether more mainstream atmosphere, which is somewhat reflected in the drinks list. You'll struggle to find any decent beer on tap, while there is not one local brew amongst the bottled beers in the fridge. This could change due to popular demand however, and there are are still some alternative refreshments available in the shape of the German energy drink Mio Mio Mate. 

Given what's been said, you could be forgiven for thinking Bau Bar has somewhat sold out. This may be true to a certain extent, but you could argue it is even a good thing. While the place does appear to lack the specialist crowd and 'anything goes' feel that the likes of Das Lokal, Krakowska 180 and Droga do Mekki had, one also has to accept that none of these venues were able to cut it. By doing things slightly differently, marketing well and opening up to a more mainstream audience, Bau Bar could finally be the place that provides Wrocław​ with a reliable electro venue. 

We need musical diversity in this city, and if Bau Bar and keeps electronic music on the map in Wrocław then that can only be a good thing, even if it doesn't carry the same weight of nostalgia as some other classic venues.

Despite a few gripes, Bau Bar is still one of the best alternative places to head out at the weekend. The place is bound to mature after time and find its own character, and on our recent visit there were signs that some electro fans are already warming to the new venue. 

Śląsk Wrocław have finished the first half of the season in a miserable 13th place following a mind numbingly boring contest against Piast Gliwice on Saturday evening. 

In an another tepid Ekstraklasa match devout of quality, Śląsk should have taken the lead in the first half given the two opportunities Paixao created for fellow forward Sylwester Patejuk. The former Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała man finished woefully on both occasions however, with each attempt more closely resembling a defensive clearance than an actual shot at goal. 

The two misses by Patejuk unfortunately sum up the quality of the team at the moment, whose 13th place in the Ekstraklasa is by no means undeserved. A lot of work will clearly have to be done in the winter break, but with no cash to play with there will be little chance of turning things around until the summer. 

The stream of poor results would in most cases spark speculation of the head coach's sacking, but this is no normal situation. The Czech veteran signed a new contract last season and terminating his contract would prove costly - so you can bet that Levy will be with the club for the foreseeable future.

Now that Śląsk are owned by the city, several hundred thousand PLN of taxpayers' money would end up in Levy's pocket if he were to be fired – which basically amounts to political suicide for Rafał Dutkiewicz. A lot of work behind the scenes is badly required over the winter, with a new private backer essential if the club are to move forward.
