2020 Wrocław Marathon To Extend Outside City Limits

Next year’s edition of the Wrocław Marathon will likely run through some of our city’s neighbouring towns and villages.

According to multiple reports in local newspapers, the initial plan for next year’s marathon would see the start line located in the town of Sobótka, which is roughly 36m away from Wrocław. The marathon did originally start there back in 1983, but ten years later the marathon changed to a Wrocław-only event.

However, the train link between Sobótka and Wrocław will not be ready before next year’s event. That would make it very difficult for all the runners to get to the start, something that could result in far less participants taking part.

Tuwroclaw.com report that the route may now instead run through towns like Kąty Wrocławskie or Siechnice.

It isn’t entirely clear why the organisers of the event are keen on the change. The marathon does enjoy high participation rates, however many Wrocławians moan about the traffic restrictions it brings. Moving the race predominantly outside the city would reduce those restrictions, but possibly also cause interruption to regional roads instead.

Whatever happens, we do know that the finish-line of the 2020 marathon will remain at the Olympic Stadium.
