Yesterday afternoon police securing Wrocław’s annual Equality March arrested a man who was seen bearing two knives while shouting “Allah Akbar”.
According to multiple reports in the local press, the incident occurred in front of Hotel Monopol at around 14.30 – around 30 minutes before the official start of the Equality March.
The man, a 41-year-old Polish citizen with a criminal record, reportedly walked towards the meeting-point of the Equality March with a knife in each hand. Police officers then bravely grappled the man to the ground and handcuffed him. Nobody was injured during the process.
Meanwhile, a heavy police presence ensured that yesterday’s equality march passed without any outbreaks of violence. The organisers of the event say a record 8,000 people attended, despite the rotten weather. Counter protests took place at points along though route of the march, though most were small and poorly attended.
Nationalist groups also plastered a few tram stops with homophobic stickers, however these were removed by the authorities swiftly.
A full report on yesterday’s events will be published on this page tomorrow.
