Game Over For Showmax’s Polish VOD Service

VOD platform Showmax will no longer be available in Poland after January 2019, it was announced yesterday.

Showmax was formed in 2015 in South Africa with the aim of becoming a VOD platform with relevant content for each of the countries it operates in.

Here in Poland, the platform is home to movies directed by Patryk Vega as well as Polish political sitcom ‘The President’s Ear’.

However with big guns like Netflix and HBO now also producing headline-making Polish TV series, Showmax is likely to have had a tough time holding onto its paying customers. VOD platforms from terrestrial broadcasters (Player, TVP VOD and Ipla) have also had an impact.

Showmax will be available in Poland until the end of January 2019, during which time it will be the only place to see Patryk Vega’s ‘Plague of Brelsau’ film.

The most popular content currently on Showmax will now likely end up on various other VOD platforms, with rumours already rife about which shows and movies will end up where.
