According to reports in Gazeta Wyborcza, a 1.5 hectare Gorilla enclosure will be built as an extension to Wrocław Zoo.
If the project comes to fruition, it will be the first time gorillas have been present at the zoo since 1989 (when they were relocated due to the zoo’s poor condition).
To allow visitors to the zoo to safely view the animals, specially elevated walkways will be built across the huge 1.5 hectare site. The enclosure should be big enough to accommodate 20 gorillas, as well as some other animals (including monkeys, reptiles and antelopes).
Another new section of the zoo will be home to a number of exotic birds.
Current estimates for the construction of the ultra-modern extension vary from 50-100 million złoty. This would come from the zoo’s own pocket, funds from the Lower Silesia budget, and possibly a loan.
If all goes well, the new attraction will officially become part of Wrocław Zoo in 2021.
