Bumpy Stretch Of Road Between Berlin And Wrocław To Be Rebuilt

The southbound side of national road 18 is to be rebuilt, meaning the bumpy ride between Berlin and Wrocław will eventually be a thing of the past.

Anyone who has travelled by road between the German capital and Wrocław will know all too well that the southbound part of national road 18 is in a shoddy condition. So much so, that some people even call it “the longest staircase in Europe.”

The road covers a 93km stretch between the border and the junction with the A4 motorway nearby Krzyżowa. Driving the full length of the road takes around an hour, but feels a lot longer given the state of the patched-up surface.

Thankfully the Polish Government have announced they are going to rebuild the road and turn it into a highway. The Minister of Infrastructure has described the project as “an investment that drivers have been waiting years for.”

According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the roadworks will be divided into five stages. The tender for the first part of the road will be announced before the end of 2018. The work will then be carried out between 2021 and 2023.
