New Horizons Film Festival: The Uncut Guide

Poland’s biggest and best film festival is back in Wrocław for another year and starts today.

Here we’ll give you the lowdown on what’s happening throughout the festival’s ten event-packed days.

What is the New Horizons International Film Festival?

Now into its 18th edition, the festival is a celebration of cinema from around the world, with the focus primarily on independent, art house movies.

The festival creates excellent opportunities for people to meet, discuss and exchange ideas, find co-producers and discover new talent. According to the organisers, more than 600 film professionals visit the festival every year. As well as film, the festival also incorporates a variety of alternative music, with live dj sets performed at the picturesque courtyard inside the military museum.

This year’s festival, which takes place between the 26th of July and the 5th of August, will feature hundreds of films screened at Kino Nowy Horyzonty.

What can I see for free on the Rynek?

Unfortunately this year’s New Horizons Film festival will not feature the iconic Rynek film screenings that have been synonymous with the event for so long.

The decision to drop the Rynek screenings has been made due to a lack of sponsorship funds and it is hoped they will return in 2019.

Back in October of 2017, T-Mobile announced that they would not be continuing as the title sponsor of the New Horizons Film Festival. Unfortunately since then little progress has been made as regards a new title sponsor, which naturally means there is a significant funding gap this year (said to be about 15%).

The drop in funding also means that the festival chill out zone on pl.Solny will be dropped, while the prize money for the winners has been reduced by 25%.

What concerts are there?

Alongside film, the New Horizons Festival also provides a platform for music. Every evening during the festival, the military museum courtyard is turned into the ‘Arsenal Festival Club’, creating an intimate backdrop for a series of unique concerts and dj sets.

Things do get underway rather late, with the supports acts on stage at 10pm – so be prepared for a lack of sleep if you’re working the next day!

The list of performances and resident DJs can be found in English here. One bonus this year is that entrance to all of these music events is completely free!
