One of Wrocław's most popular bridges could be closed to the public for a year in order for vital maintenance works to be carried out.
According to Gazeta Wrocławska, Wrocław's Road and City Maintenance Board have submitted an application to the city council for the renovation of the bridge. If the application is accepted, the work will start sometime in the next three years.
Before any of the renovation can take place, the city will have to announce a tender for the contract and choose the best (or the cheapest) offer.
In order to carry out the maintenance works, all of the lovers' padlocks will have to be removed from the bridge. Hundreds of padlocks also had to be removed in 2013 and 2016 so as to allow for maintenance on the bridge.
Ewa Mazur, a spokesperson for Wrocław's Road and City Maintenance Board, says the main reason the bridge needs attention is rusting.
The Road and City Maintenance Board have pretty much concluded that the entire bridge should be renovated, from the girders to the asphalt, to the bearings and stone supports. The extent of the work means that Tumski Bridge will have to be closed to the public for 12 months.
