Adam, a Pole working abroad, returns to his home in a Polish village on Christmas Eve. Initially he hides the real reason for this unexpected visit, but soon begins to introduce more relatives into his plans. After declaring that he will become a father, copius amounts of alcohol flow at the dinner table, making it a Christmas Eve to remember for all the wrong reasons.

A lavish trip through Europe quickly unfolds into a race against time to solve a murder aboard a train. When an avalanche stops the Orient Express dead in its tracks, the world's greatest detective – Hercule Poirot – arrives to interrogate all passengers and search for clues before the killer can strike again.

Touko Laaksonen, a decorated officer, returns home after a harrowing and heroic experience serving his country in World War II. But life in Finland during peacetime proves equally distressing. He finds post-war Helsinki rampant with homophobic persecution, and gay men around him are being pressured to marry women and have children. Touko finds refuge in his liberating art: homoerotic drawings of muscular men, free of inhibitions.
