A Wroclaw cyclist escaped unharmed after being hit hard by a van yesterday. Shocking video footage of the accident was published on the Gazeta Wroclawska website last night, prompting a wave of criticism in the direction of the van's driver.
Pedaling down Kołłątaja street well within the cycle lane, the woman cyclist got the shock of her life when the van to her left suddenly turned in front of her path. With one hand already off the bike in order to signal a right turn, the woman had no chance of taking evasive action and crashed right into the van as it turned towards her. She then landed underneath the van as the vehicle grounded to a halt.
The driver, who was completely unaware of the cyclist's presence until the impact, quickly leaped out of the vehicle and pulled the woman to safety. Despite the big impact the woman was able to stand on two feet after the accident – at least until the shock of what happened kicked in.
Wroclaw Police are investigating the incident having seen the video footage. Many believe the driver is at fault as the rules of the road indicate that he should have given way to the cyclist in the cycle lane. Both the driver and cyclist signaled they were making right hand turns, but with the junction just metres away, the cyclist would not have expected the van to turn earlier.
