Bulka z Maslem: Wroclaw’s Best Beer Garden?

Inherited from fallen Pizza restaurant Casablanca, the beautiful beer garden on Włodkowica 8a is now decorating Bułka z Masłem, a newly opened cafe/bar/restaurant combo that's already found itself a rather populous following.

In Wrocław there's no shortage of pubs where you can drink outside in the summer months. Nevertheless, the term 'ogródek piwny' (beer garden) does tend to get a bit overused in this part of the world. A few random tables and chairs laid out on the street might not exactly be enough to represent a beer garden, but many Wrocław based pubs will glady label it as such anyway. The same criticism can't be said of Bułka z Masłem however, whose beer garden actually looks like one. Lush in greenery and sheltered by a sturdy gazebo, it really is a comfy place in which to pass the time. Its location away from any main street means it's quiet during the day, while live sets from guest djs insure there's a buzz in the garden at nighttime too.

Over the years, many of Wrocław's establishments have tried their upmost to attract clients throughout the day. While 24 hour bistros have certainly shown no sign of abating, bars and superclubs have had varying difficulties in attracting enough punters at different times of the day. Bułka z Masłem's appeal spans from morning till night, and seeing as they appear to have got the balance right, there's every chance they'll be here for some time to come. The decor is minimalist and contemporary, albeit a little bland – but there's no doubting this is a venue aiming to stake its place in the hearts and minds of Wrocław's alternative community.

Bułka z Masłem is definitely an attractive spot to enjoy a morning coffee and croissant, although the 10am opening time is admittedly not the earliest around. For later in the day they've a selection of salads and sandwiches, while those with a bigger appetite might struggle to resist going for one of Bułka z Masłem's burgers. Starting from 16zl, you can get yourself a properly grilled burger that in no way resembles a McDonalds offering, as well as chips and a small glass of coke. Across the road at the pretentious Winners Bar, you can expect to pay around twice as much – making Bułka z Masłem's deal look pretty good. The final product was decent too – this was no nonsense, fast food fare that was both satisfying and made in the right way. The presentation could have been a bit better, but hey you can't be too picky given the prices elsewhere on Włodkowica street.

On our visit we swung by around 7pm and as you can see from the photo, the beer garden was packed with people. Bułka z Masłem has a very open and sociable feel, making it a great place to eat, drink or even party (on Friday/Saturday night things do tend to liven up a bit). All of these things and more, make Bułka z Masłem a venue well worth paying a visit.
